How much do moving containers like PODS cost?

You pack. They drive. The bill shows up in three pieces, so here's every piece.

What a moving container is

A company drops a big lockable box at your curb. You load it at your own speed. They haul it to your new place, or keep it in storage until you're ready. Packing is your job. Driving is theirs. Storage comes built in.

Who it suits

People with a gap between homes. People who want to pack over a week, not one frantic Saturday. People who would rather not steer a rental truck down the 405.

Who it doesn't

If you won't lift a box, a container is just a very large place to leave your stuff. You still load it yourself or hire help. No driveway and a tight street? Check where it can park before you book.

The four big names

How many containers, and where the money goes

Every container bill is built from the same parts: getting the box to you, rent by the month, and the haul to the other end. A number goes in a cell only after we've logged at least 3 real Los Angeles quotes for it. We're not there yet, so we're not guessing.

2 bedrooms: about 4 rooms to fill, counting the living room and kitchen.

Questions people ask

How does moving container pricing actually work?

There's no price list. Every company quotes by ZIP code, move date and how long you keep the box. The bill comes in parts: delivering the empty container, rent for each month you keep it, and moving it to your new place or to storage. Ask for the quote broken into those parts so you can compare them side by side.

What does the rental clock mean?

It's how long you keep the container, counted from the day it shows up. PODS includes the first 30 days, then rents by the month. U-Haul charges the first month at delivery, then monthly. U-Pack gives you up to 3 business days to load and 3 to unload, and ReloCube moves include 30 days of storage after arrival. Pack slow, pay more rent. Pack fast, keep the change.

How long can you keep a moving container?

PODS, 1-800-PACK-RAT and U-Haul all say you can keep it as long as you need. PODS and U-Haul rent by the month while you do. U-Pack is the strict one: the load and unload days are set, and extra storage is added for a monthly fee.

Is a local container move different from a long-distance one?

Yes. U-Pack calls itself a long-distance self-move service. PODS does local moves, offers its 8 ft and 16 ft for long distance, and uses independent carriers for those hauls. 1-800-PACK-RAT runs the same four steps either way, and long-distance moves include a no-cut lock. U-Haul ships U-Box containers across town or across the country, and most shipments arrive in 7 to 14 business days. Get the long-distance quote with your real ZIP codes, because the route is part of the price.

What happens if I need more time?

Call before the clock runs out. PODS and U-Haul keep billing month to month. 1-800-PACK-RAT says extending is a phone call. U-Pack charges daily fees once you pass the set load or unload days, so tell them early and they will work out a fix with you.
